Description:

Kundiman's Asian American Poetry Retreat consists of workshops, group exercises and mentorship sessions in a rigorous yet highly supportive environment.  Readings, lectures and informal social gatherings are also part of the scheduled events for the 2010 retreat, from Tuesday, June 22 to Sunday, June 27 at Fordham University's Rose Hill Campus. The number of fellows is increased to 24 to meet growing demand for the program.

The daily workshops address the craft of poetry through writing exercises and group discussions of fellows'poems.  The emphasis is on providing positive critique and suggestions for improvement in the newly written work, not on engaging in the type of criticism that can make feedback difficult to accept and limit risk-taking.  The workshops are led by celebrated Asian American poets of diverse aesthetics who also provide one-on-one mentorship sessions with fellows on the final day. Tan Lin, Paisley Rekdal and Regie Cabico are faculty in 2010.

Kundiman balances the intensity of the schedule with individual attention and opportunities for group interaction, laying the groundwork for the feeling of community that is one of its strongest characteristics. Informal social occasions occur in the context of meals, late night gatherings, quiet conversations with faculty, staff and fellows.

The annual Kundiman Retreat Reading features the faculty and one fellow from each group on the Friday night of the retreat. It is advertised to the host community and a reception follows where guests can meet and speak with faculty and fellows.
