Description:

The Virginia Festival of the Book (VABook!) is an annual five-day celebration of reading, authors, and book culture. Held in venues throughout historic Charlottesville and the University of Virginia, this free and open to the public event unites authors with audiences in a quaint setting just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

VABook! is a program of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. A well-established event in its fifteenth year, the Festival has attracted such literary luminaries as Jimmy Santiago Baca, Russell Banks, Geraldine Brooks, Michael Chabon, Rita Dove, Claudia Emerson, Nathan Englander, John Hope Franklin, George Garrett, Nikki Giovanni, Jane Hirshfield, Edward P. Jones, Garrison Keillor, Barbara Kingsolver, Stanley Kunitz, Paule Marshall, Heather McHugh, Walter Mosley, David McCullough, Alice McDermott, Victor S. Navasky, Michael Ondaatje, Fintan O'Toole, Gregory Orr, Robert Pinsky, Reynolds Price, Vijay Seshadri, Charles Simic, Lee Smith, Art Spiegelman, Henry Taylor, Colm Toibin, Natasha Trethewey, Luis Alberto Urrea, and Charles Wright.

Most events are panels or readings followed by book signings. A few paid ticket events (performances, luncheons, and authors' reception) are included among the more than 200 free programs for youth and adults.
